Temples Forecourt

By the sea the buildings of Mnajdra open out ahead.

Stepping inside the installation reveals the panoramic vista of the forecourt across the 360-degree surround screen with the Mediterranean to the left, distant views to the tiny island of Filfla and the façade of the temple cluster ahead.

As archaeologists have noted there is a place of embarkation below the cliffs at Mnajdra unique in the otherwise sheer cliffs. Evidence of boat carvings and materials brought from nearby Sicily, Pantallaria and Lipari (red ochre, greenstone and obsidian) indicate knowledge of navigation and the importance of the sea to temple culture. Soundscapes associated with the landscape environment play across the 12 channel audio system in response to movement amplifying and mixing the sounds of migratory and local birds and cicadas with distant sounds of the sea

In moving around, visitors orientate to the extraordinary spaces of Mnajdra:  the three doorways leading to inter-connected groups of chambers and the pathway to the intra-mural back room. Interactively through motion tracking sensors, exact position is monitored and registered by on-screen performers and the presence of shadows indicating entrances to the building.
